I’m Stephen Mannings, and I’m the Director of Choral Outreach at the majestic Liverpool Cathedral. I am also a freelance accompanist, composer and musical director.
Born in Liverpool, I gained my bachelor’s degree and MBA in business studies from the University of Bangor before returning to Liverpool to study for a master’s degree in music. After a period as Crypt Organist, Director of the Junior Choir and outreach officer at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, I took up the position of Assistant Choral Director at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in 2012.
In 2018 my title was changed to Director of Choral Outreach, and as such, I have leadership roles in anything which the music department does to engage people from Liverpool and its neighbouring boroughs, and of any age. Our projects include Teeny Maestros (early years music education), Junior Choir, The Gilbert Scott Singers (formerly Youth Choir), Liverpool64 (adult community choir), and the Cathedral Schools Singing Programme (working with 12 schools per term).
Much of what I do has an entrepreneurial edge to it, and so skills gained from my business studies days are put to good use. Our most recent initiative is the set-up of the Liverpool Cathedral School of Music, offering group and individual instrumental tuition, grade 5 music theory courses, and GCSE music.
In addition to my full-time role at the cathedral, I continue to have a flourishing freelance career within the arts. Over the last decade I have built up a reputation as a highly competent piano accompanist, experienced in playing for the full span of instrumental exams, but specialising in accompanying the higher graded music exams, diplomas and university music qualifications. I have played for countless music graduates across the region in concerts and on their showcase reels. I have held various accompanist (and MD) positions for choirs and choral societies. During most music exam periods you’ll find me playing for a school or established instrumental teacher for their set of exams. In 2013 I became an Associate Artist with English National Ballet and have with the internationally-renowned company regularly since, as a pianist on their Dance for Parkinson’s and Schools Link programmes.”
I live in Knowsley with my beautiful wife, Kim, and our much-loved greyhound, Philly (both pictured above). When not working or performing, I’m a keen athlete, often out having a run or competing in relays and marathons.
